She has been credited by Billboard Magazine as being the most successful artist of the 1990s. In 1997 Mariah decided to add a new element of music into her songs. This was the hip hop style of music. However for many fans the addition of hip hop did not enhance or make her music sound better. In fact her sales of singles lead to a decline in fans buying her songs.

Bee Gees
By Nishan
You’ve probably heard songs like “You Win Again” “Staying Alive” and “Night fever”. These songs are part of the popular repertoire of songs by the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees are a group of singers who hail from England and they have been around the music scene for more than five decades and they are still going strong. Before going any further however, you might be interested in finding out a few facts about this most popular group.
The first fact is that the Bee Gees are a trio of brothers known as the Gibbs brothers. Next fact is that these soulful singers have drawn their inspiration for their song style from the Beatles. However they have their own renditional style which you should not confuse with the Beatles music. Third fact is that they have a signature tone which can be heard with their falsetto high voices. And finally all of the songs which have been composed and sung by this group have the ability of melting your soul and sending it winging towards the heavens.
As stated earlier the Bee Gees have been around the music scene for more than five decades. During this time they have retained the wonderful ability of being able to adapt to the changing face of music and fans. In addition to singing their own songs the Bee Gees have also collaborated with other popular artists like Diana Ross, Barbara Streisand, Dolly Parton Kenny Rogers, and even Dionne Warwick. The songs which have come about with these partnerships are “Islands In the Stream”, “Woman in Love”, “Heartbreaker”, and “Chain Reaction”.
While these songs are popular in their own right many fans of the Bee Gees love the songs which have been sung only with the Bee Gees as the main focus. Some of these great all time hits are ones like “Staying Alive”, “You Win Again”, “Civilization”, “Still Waters”, and “Size isn’t Everything”. With all of these songs and their gift of appealing to fans for more than five decades the Bee Gees have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, earned numerous awards for Lifetime Achievement honors from various groups across the world and also they have been awarded the Brit Award for their magnificent contribution to the world of music.

Soft Rock
By Nishan
The roots of my childhood belong to the long hazy days of summer, cooling berry slushies, splashing around in the pool, and of course listening to Soft Rock music. Those are my first remembrances and ties to music – to this day if I hear Survivor, Toto, Air Supply, or any other great of soft rock, I find myself humming along to the music. But is it only good times and great memories that defines the genre of soft rock for many of us? Or can it be that soft rock transcends time and appeals to everyone?
Well, the truth of it is that soft rock is one of those music genres that appeals to the lighter side of most people. For one thing it yields up great mood music, it’s easy to slow dance to, and well frankly, the music is good and it speaks right to your heart. Most soft rock songs focus on relationships, love, and day to day life, with a catchy/ dreamy tune that just calls out for you to sing along with it. And this is the reason why most soft rock songs last forever (or they seem to at any rate).
From the King himself, Elvis Presley, who made early Rock n’ Roll so popular, down through the Bee Gees who helped to usher in the era of Soft Rock, through to The Eagles, Sting, (and The Police), Chicago, REO Speedwagon and many others too numerous to mention here, it cannot be denied that soft rock has spawned some of the greatest songs ever to be heard.
And in fact, it is still spawning some of the best writers and singers out there today, in the form of Lifehouse, the Counting Crows, and Maroon 5 to name a few.
Detractors of this style of music will say that the music is not meaningful enough and that there is simply no substance to it, no character, no soul. Well, this is simply not true. There is soul and character to soft rock music, you just need to take a seat somewhere and listen for it. And if you can’t hear it, why not try taking a leisurely drive with some drive time music playing in the background? You’ll be sure to find the heart and soul of soft rock then.

Music Rocks My World – Does it Rock Yours?
By Nishan
Music. It can tame the soul and soothe the savage beast within you. It can move you to tears, or it can make you want to get up and dance the night away. It’s there with you through the good times…and through the bad. It floated you up onto cloud number nine when you had your first kiss, and it helped you back down to earth when your heart was broken. It’s a language without barriers – and the one thing in this world that everyone understands. Music helps to make your world a better one.
Whether you find yourself singing along at the top of your lungs completely oblivious to the fact that you are in fact quite, quite off-key; or whether you find yourself singing in the shower as you lather up, using the shower-head as an impromptu mike, you will find that music is a large part of your life.
Personally speaking, I find that music helps me to do many things, from slaving away on my computer, to cooking a virtuoso meal (a PB&J sandwich!), to taking a lazy drive down the highway with the sound of the 80’s filling my soul.
I’m not an ardent fan of any one particular genre or type of music. I find my likes and dislikes spread over a wide variety of genres, and what I listen to depends on my mood at the moment. Right now I’m listening to the quirky yet eminently listenable “Rotterdam (or Anywhere)” by The Beautiful South.
So what type of music are you into?
- Soft Rock
- Hard Rock
- Rhythm and Blues (R&B)
- Jazz
- Classical
- Country
- House
- Hip-Hop
- Rap
The list as you can see is endless, but if you regularly tune in to my Music Sack blog, you will find yourself entertained and enlightened by the different aspects of music I take a look at, including what makes some of these genres so popular.
Music. It’s all around you. What makes you rock?
